The People
of Supai
I don't
think that we were in Supai long enough to say much about
the people who live there, but I want to tell you some impressions
so that you know what to expect if you go there. Supai is
a small community of less than 600 people, which is, at least
in some ways, relatively isolated from the rest of the world.
Many homes have satellite TV antennas and the town has telephone
service and access to the Internet. Even so, people can't
just drive somewhere else for the afternoon. There are none
of the amenities that we expect in our towns like movie theaters
and shopping malls.

Although
tourism is an important component of the local economy, people
are typically not very forthcoming with strangers. I think
that this is the result of a variety of factors. Probably
the most important factor is cultural. Like Minnesota, I think
that the people of Supai have a culture of the shy where you
don't readily speak to strangers and you certainly don't befriend
them indiscriminately. I'm sure that some Minnesotans might
disagree with me here, but I think it's basically true.
