Karen & Jim's Guide to the Grand Canyon, Havasu Falls, and Sedona

Havasu Falls

Havasu Canyon is one the most beautiful and powerful places I've ever visited. When we visited it was early spring and trees were just beginning to leaf out and consequently had that beautiful light green color found only in new leaves. The one and one half mile hike to Havasu Falls from the village of Supai was as much a wonder as the falls themselves. The coolest and possibly the most beautiful time of day to make this hike is just after dawn before the sunlight has had a chance to shine into the canyon. This was an incredibly peaceful time of day and perhaps my favorite time of day no matter where I am. As we walked toward the falls we saw the morning light start to bring out the colors and contrast in the canyon walls that rose up around us.

The red walls of the canyon rose up just feet from the right hand side of the trail giving me a sense of safety and warmth. On the left side of the trail was the beautiful blue Havasu Creek. The trail followed the river downstream from the village through the cottonwoods. The trail, which was lined in all manner of thorny and flowering plants, descended almost imperceptibly at first with some small dips and rises along the river. Then we came to a broad section of trail in an open area near a bend in the river. Here the trail descended about a 100 feet while the river descended over a series of falls.
